The arrival of September means fall is upon us. It’s time to bust out your plaid shirts, gather up the family, grab the camera and head out to the nearest farm with u-pick apples. Despite the pandemic, there are a handful of farms in Downstate Illinois to safely visit and experience one of the fall’s most popular activities.
Eckert’s Belleville Farm opened in late August for pick-your-own apples, and their Millstadt Fun Farm opens for business starting on September 2nd. In an effort to keep visitors as safe as possible, there are a limited amount of slots available each half an hour to pick-your-own fruit. Eckert’s encourages everyone to log onto their website to purchase field access passes to ensure folks receive the time slot of their choice. Eckert’s also opens their Millstadt Fun Farm each September, and visitors will be required to do the same at that location.

Just a short drive from Eckert’s is Braeutigam Orchards in Belleville, another family favorite that offers u-pick apples! Reservations are not required at Braeutigam, but face coverings and social distancing are recommended for all visitors.
Another great place to experience pick-your-own apples is Schwartz Orchard in Centralia. Much like at Braeutigam Orchards, social distancing and facemasks are encouraged for all visitors to Schwartz. We highly recommend a road trip to Centralia, not just for the apples – but for their apple cider and apple cider donuts at Schwartz.
Have fun, be safe and happy picking!
