The largest man-made lake in Illinois (26,000 acres), Carlyle Lake is a premier location for outdoor sports. Well known to sailers, it is one of the best and most challenging for sailboats. There is also boating, fishing, hunting, bird watching, sand beaches and camping areas. Hotels, cabins and golf courses make the area a true outdoor lover’s playground.
Not only can you sample fine local wines, but the restaurant serves first-rate barbecue. Banquet facilities are also available.
Built in the late 1800s as a private home, the museum holds many artifacts from the area, including genealogical material, books and periodicals on the history of the county. Every Thursday except the first Thursday of the month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and by appointment.
The bell was rung as the island was captured from the British during the Revolutionary War by Col. George Rogers Clark and his “Long Knives.”
